Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty
The United States monetary authority cut interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction this year during financial volatility stemming from the government closure and trade duties.
Move Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve
The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Changes
In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job
The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.
Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.
The figure of positions added to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.
Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline
Though BLS was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.
Price Data Shows Gradual Increase
Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are rising, although slowly. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
