Time is right to switch Manchester United's formation - Ruben Amorim insists.

Man Utd players in training
Man Utd captain Bruno Fernandes was among seven first-team stars to miss the holiday period win against Newcastle United.

Manager Ruben Amorim contends that altering Man Utd's formation due to external scrutiny would have meant "the end" for him.

In a first against Newcastle, Amorim ditched his customary back three formation with wide defenders and opted to deploy an standard four-man defense with two holding midfielders.

By his own admission this at times transformed into a back six in the latter minutes as his squad dug in for a win - securing just their second shutout of the season.

Although he once famously said that not even the highest authority could force him to change his system, Amorim asserts the capacity to play with different formations has always been part of his strategy.

However, he emphasizes he could only implement the change when his team were performing at an acceptable level - otherwise it would appear as if he was giving in to outside pressure.

"When I arrived here the previous campaign, I realized maybe I didn't possess the personnel to perform effectively in that formation, but it was the start of a process," he stated.

"Our aim was to establish an identity. Today is a different juncture. We lack a full complement of players, and we need adjust, so they comprehend the reason we are switching things up.

"The change isn't because of the demands of you guys, or the faithful.

"Whenever media criticize altering the formation repeatedly, I cannot make a change because the players will think I'm altering things because of you and I feel that is the downfall for the coach.

"When we are getting results in our preferred setup, then is the opportunity to evolve.

"This will help us become a more complete side because when our full complement of personnel are available, we are not going to play with three defenders in every match."

Availability Challenges Continue

Having only two wins in eight games before beating Newcastle, it is questionable whether Amorim is correct to claim his side have been in good form.

He is, nonetheless, working with a severely stretched squad, with multiple senior stars already ruled out for the forthcoming home game against struggling Wolverhampton Wanderers.

That total will increase if midfielder Mason Mount is unable to shake off the injury that forced his exit from the Newcastle game at the interval.

Skipper Bruno Fernandes is among those who will be absent for the Wolves clash, despite the fact he is reportedly urging his manager to allow him to make a comeback following his hamstring injury.

"Bruno is already saying he has to train," said Amorim. "But there is absolutely no possibility he is going to play against Wolves. No chance. That's definitive."

Fernandes' Influence Remains

However, the 31-year-old will probably continue to be deeply engaged, as while most unavailable stars view matches from a private box, Fernandes was seen monitoring the warm-ups from the mouth of the player's tunnel before the Newcastle game.

Amorim is sure his captain to carry on providing guidance.

"He is a leader," he declared. "He cannot be the type of player that when he is not playing, he's not talking and offering advice. He's always speaking. That is the reason he's the skipper.

"He has negative aspects at times - the way he moves his arms - but he has a multitude of positive qualities. Even after he finishes treatment, he heads to observe the rest of the squad training. There are a lot of aspects you don't see.

"I'm not sure if he desires my position or not, but he's a leader. He is a leader."

Recovery Timeline for Key Personnel

Although the exact timeline for Fernandes' comeback - and that of other injured players like Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire - remains unclear, before the conclusion of January, United will welcome back Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo from international duty.
