Users Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters
A recent study indicates that patients who discontinue new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users purchasing these medications must be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a reversion to starting mass within about one and a half years.
Weighing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
The team note that people who lose weight through dieting generally experience a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Doctors propose the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.
These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Issue?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Experiences
Users who have discontinued the medication describe a intense resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if something flipping and you become starving," described an individual.
The struggle is compounded if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Use
Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Use is higher among women than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success likely depends on ongoing lifestyle changes.
